New to Chicago? Here’s an Award-Winning List for Rookies
Our team is full of Chicago natives and long-time residents, but also one very special newbie to our city (hi!) And that addition got the group thinking… “If someone had just moved to Chicago, where would we send them to eat first?” And after intense debates and ongoing discussions, this is that list (for now) of must-eats. So, now I’m off to start digging in!
Gino’s East Deep Dish Pizza {Multiple Locations}
This deep dish dynasty was started by two taxi drivers who noticed the need for a good pizza on the Magnificent Mile. Let’s just say they exceeded their goal of making “good” pizza.
The dough is undeniably fluffy and handmade every single day… it doesn’t get fresher than that. Head here when you’re hungry; this rich pizza experience represents all that deep dish is meant to be.
Portillo’s Hot Dogs {Multiple Locations}
You’ve probably heard about the infamous “Chicago Dog” before, and Portillo’s is a crowd favorite for this much-loved bite. It’s their signature, in fact! But, if you’re not in the mood for hot dogs, their Italian Beef sandwiches are also a BIG hit and you can find this city staple in plenty of locations for a casual grab-n-go. Pssttt…Any regular would also tell you not to miss a slice of their Chocolate Cake - It’s a favorite of our team!
Girl & the Goat {809 West Randolph Street, Chicago; 312.492.6262}
If you’ve perused maps in search of your next tasty discovery in Chicago, you’re likely wondering, ‘What’s up with all the goat restaurants?’
In 2008, Stephanie Izard was the first female to win Top Chef and, lucky us, she’s a Chicago native. Chef Izard has five restaurants around Chicago all of which pertain to her theme of goats, and she takes care of our city, making some of the most delicious meals you can find anywhere. Girl & the Goat was her original spot, and is still on the top of our list for its blend of farm to table vibes and unique plates in every course. Do not miss the goat empanadas.
Firecakes {Multiple Locations; 312.329.6500}
Our mouths are still watering after having a recent meeting at Firecakes over a Buttermilk Old Fashioned donut. Firecakes glazes their donuts with the perfect amount of surgery goodness and reminds us what it means to really indulge. And if you can’t decide between ice cream and donuts, look no further. Firecakes offers homemade ice cream to sandwich between your favorite donut for warmer days. It’s a dream summer bite!
Virtue {1462 East 53rd Street, Chicago; 773.947.8831}
Chicago is a city of serious foodies and if you’re looking for a taste of Southern Cuisine, Virtue is where it’s at. Their team includes both a James Beard Award-Winning Owner/Chef in Erick Williams and a Top 4 finalist in Top Chef in their Chef de Cuisine Damarr Brown, and every dish is honestly a must-try. Think warm biscuits, fresh gumbo and housemade cornbread paired with impeccable hospitality. We feel at home just thinking about it—Run, don’t walk!
Signature Room {875 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago; 312.787.9596}
The best way to get a grip on our city is to see it all at once. At the Signature Room, in the former John Hancock building, that’s certainly possible from their 95th floor dining room. If you’re itching to level up even more, the lounge is on the 96th floor. Regardless of which floor you choose, the Signature Room has views and vibes on lock for downtown Chicago.
Gene & Georgetti {500 North Franklin Street, Chicago; 312.527.3718}
When we think “classic steakhouse” Gene & Georgetti don’t just come to mind, they give it meaning. The actual Italian government even recognized this restaurant for maintaining Italian excellence via the Marche Ospitalità Italian award in 2022! The upscale feel of Gene & Georgetti translates to the flavors in every dish. They’ve made their mark for more than 80 years and remain a leading Chicago dining experience.
Twin Anchors {1655 North Sedgwick Street, Chicago; 312.266.1616}
Ribs don’t get better than this. And we’ve done research on this! Twin Anchors will serve you the best ribs in Chicago dine-in, take-out and delivery. This BBQ joint has a way with their fall-off-the-bone meats and specialty sauces. It’s hard to pick a favorite sauce, but the Prohibition Sauce® never misses. Come hungry and ready to eat messy!
Mindy's Bakery {1623 North Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago; 773.489.1747}
Your dream neighborhood bakery is actually real and it’s called Mindy’s Bakery.
Mindy Segal is a legendary baker and has been named “Outstanding Pastry Chef” by James Beard among other recognitions. Head to her bakery to brighten every morning - even if you’re gluten-free. For sweet lovers, our go-to is one of their Cream Cheese Pastries and never leave without a hot chocolate, house rules.
Afternoon Tea at The Peninsula {108 East Superior Street, Chicago; 312.337.2888}
The Peninsula is contemporary and elegant to a tea ;) No really! This is the ideal space for an afternoon tea and delicious bites. Head here between 2:30 and 4:30pm to enjoy a peaceful afternoon; just don’t forget to book and prepay online. As you sit back and relax, enjoy their lofty ceilings, classy design and tea at one of the city’s best hotels.
