Black-Owned Bakeries, Bars and Restaurants in Chicago

via The Duplex

One of the best ways to show up for local businesses is supporting them directly. Shop, eat and drink small! This is especially important to Black-owned restaurants, given that only 9% of US restaurants are Black- or African American-owned according to the National Restaurant Association. In order to grow that number, and help these existing businesses continue to thrive, they need our support… and not just in February. So check out this list and support today, tomorrow and always!

The Duplex {3137 West Logan Boulevard, Chicago; 773.697.4153}

Right off of Logan Square Park, The Duplex hosts rotating chef concepts so you can visit again and again…and always have a great time! Their happy hour deals are some of our favorite in the city, and their weekend brunch is legendary. Get the Turkish Eggs and thank us later ;)

Soulé {3615 West Roosevelt Road, Chicago; 773.696.9485}

Soulé, a modern take on soul & Creole cooking is the perfect spot for a cozy meal in West Town. As a little girl, owner Bridgette Flagg spent hours in the kitchen with her mother and grandmother. Now, the chef carries on the same traditions and mission as her grandma and mom– cook food with soul– at Soulé! With everything from Fried Catfish and Chicken to Surf and Turf Pasta, you’ll love their menu of Southern classics.

via Frontier

Frontier {1072 North Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago; 773.772.4322}

At Frontier, nature and the seasons dictate what’s on the menu. James Beard Award Semifinalist Chef Brian Jupiter gives a taste of eating and drinking on the edge of civilization thanks to specials like whole animals. Meals are served in a communal setting  with plenty of food and drinks to go around! It’s a great spot for a group meal or celebration with food-loving friends.

Justice of the Pies {8655 South Blackstone Avenue, Chicago}

With a recently opened new location, this Black-owned bakery from Maya-Camille Broussard specializes in (of course) sweet and savory pies, but they don’t stop there! There are also treats like quiches and cookies, and even sandwiches for those more in a savory mood. Lauded by everyone from Food & Wine Magazine to The Today Show, you can bet these desserts will be legendary.

Provaré {1523 West Chicago Avenue, Chicago; 312.988.0943}

Creole and Italian are a combination that (no surprise) is so delicious! Provaré makes pasta fresh daily and serves up unique dishes like Lemon Pepper Chicken Alfredo and Salmon Eggs Rolls as well as classics like Steak Frites. Their menu is the definition of comfort food and then they also have a late night speakeasy called Privé as well - Don’t miss that for after dinner drinks!

Demera {Multiple Locations}

Opened in 2007, Demera Ethiopian Restaurant is one of Chicago’s favorite women and Black-owned restaurants. With locations in Uptown and TimeOut Market, Demera serves Chicago residents and visitors daily with hospitality and an array of unique flavors. Owner Tigist Reda learned traditional Ethiopian recipes from the women in her family, and is now spreading that culinary history throughout Chicago.

It’s a space that’s meant for you to really relax and spend time with good food and wine.

Daisy's Po-Boy and Tavern {5215 South Harper Avenue, Chicago; 773.675.8767}

When you’re looking for a good time, Daisy’s should be your pick! Helmed by James Beard award-winning Chef Erick Williams from Virtue, Daisy’s is a casual spot that brings all the delicious fun of New Orleans to Hyde Park. Their Muffulettas are not to miss but they also have fun Happy Hour specials and live jazz music on the first Wednesday of the month.
